Well, the world can’t be all bad can it? In Athens, GA…and 10 days down to a new Radiohead record? R.E.M. and Radiohead = heaven.

The problem with newspapers isn’t necessarily about how bad their blogs are, its that they don’t, as an online presence have the authenticity of a blog. Newspapers are in a very weird state, in that unless your the NY Times, you’re a regional presence, trying to enforce a locality through a very non-local based system. They are in this inbetween: trying for the authenticity of a blog for their local populace, with the generalities of a global news service. What you end up with is a mix of personality and generic, a mix of authentic and syndicated. Newspapers have to decide WHAT they are, then define from that what they can be online.

The EchoStar -> Sling deal is going to put some focus on the weird state of broadband in the US. We have disparate upstream bandwidth to downstream, and ISP’s imposing limits rather than improving their own infrastructure. I love my Sling devices, but we use them 90% of the time for slinging our HDTV feed from DirectTV to other computers in the house rather than out to the world. Location-free TV is a great thing, but limited by shitty bandwidth.
they wont’ change “social graph” to “social network” becuase SNA (social network analysis) was en vogue a few years back, and now people are discovering undirected and directed graph structures and all hip on SNA again. Its good marketing by some, and poor fact checking by others. The reality is: graph theory, social network analysis, etc are a long standing field with a very good academic history. In an effort to define an area endemic to EVERYTHING involving human interaction (much less human/computer interaction), people coin a term, make it a concept, then make it This Weeks Geek Headline. Yawn. Next.

did anyone actually watch the video it was talking about? Not exactly happy Saturday morning viewing.

Taken from Freedom Communication’s “video brochure” type thing (they are my former employer, long ago):

Just watch: Apple releases HDTV resolution movie rentals straight to AppleTV and Forbes will be singing a different tune. The thing is a COMPUTER idiots. Not a set top device necessarily. One software update renders it a completely new product.
