R.E.M. in Dublin

R.E.M. in Dublin: REM went Web 2.0 during their Dublin shows and allowed the fans, the band and the label (me) to collaborate on a site. It was very interesting in that not many people (ultimately) were in Dublin, and yet for everyone, it felt that we were all there.

Through YouTube, audio, photos, the Murmurs.com boards and blogging, the experience carried worldwide so that at the end of the 5 day stint, all of us were smiling, whether in Dublin or not. Some choice quotes:

“they really went out there for the fans (as well as for themselves, of course) in a very heartfelt manner, and they deserve standing ovations for that.”

“I think the whole experiment was the best thing they’ve done in years. Even from a far distance, this was a fun week to be an REM fan. Probably the most I’ve enjoyed following this band since the Monster tour.”

“So a big thank you to the guys for a personally great night on Saturday - and to everyone else for enabling me to live vicariously throughout the other nights, enjoying the excitement and verve of each ‘not a show’, thrilling at the setlists, and listening to the download from Saturday. (Come on, guys, I need the other nights as well). Everyone: R.E.M., techies, fans one and all, have made this a week to remember……..THANKS”

If we’re to evaluate what “the new web is” in terms of the music business, I think the shambolic chaos of REMDublin.com and the following photo sum it up:

Thanks REM for letting REMDublin.com happen, and thanks to all the fans who made it possible.
