Java threads. Seriously. Programming a nice threaded architecture in Java was like herding animals. You inject them with some intelligence, make it probabalistic, put some randomness in and allow for inter-thread communication (so they can keep up on progress) and BOOM: you had a zoo that worked to solve a problem. Unleash threads in a competitive environment and not only did they cooperate (if programmed right), but it was damn fast. I’m still proud of my data-base worker-thread algorithm which used a railroad car metaphor to schedule asynchronous DB writes/reads. It made it so a very lean MySQL backend could support a 10,000 thread graph structure.
What do you miss? Is it quite as nerdy as what I miss?
485 + Ajax/Javascript/Dhtml examples and demos to download: This is going to lead to 300kb “hello world” homepages. Wonderful. On-hover is the new marquee tag. Mark my words.
Blog pirates on the horizon! - Download Squad: I recently got a story linked to from BoingBoing, and I was getting my ego alerts for a week after from pirate blogs. Sucks, but like I said before, you reap what you sow.
Bug Labs (initial review) (Scripting News): Bug Labs seems to be brining the unrealized promise of Max/MSP, early electronics toolkits (like the ones I had), PIX controllers, Logo and the like to head. I can imagine that Proce5sing people, Cycling ‘74 and others will be paying attention. I think also that everyone always forgets art as the first adoption of emerging technology such as this. We’re so focused on Web 2.0 shit, that we forget the true Web 2.0 happened in the early 90’s with people like Donna Haraway, Sandy Stone, Stellarc, et al. Everything innovative becomes pedestrian and its always the artists that make the innovation again. Not Yahoo!

: this is pretty cool. a way of hiding things except for digital cameras by using infrared wavelengths. I dig it completely.
A VC: Declaring Bankruptcy: another weekend, and another batch of “Oh look how popular I am!” posts from all the a-list bloggers. You know what guys? Woe is you. Woe is me! I get 500 e-mails a day. I get dozens of Facebook requests a day as well. You all, and we all, made a system in which the promiscuous exchange of data is the predicate for it functioning. Do not complain about reaping what you sowed. These are the machines that we made, and in the absence of the ability to deal with it, we should create systems that help in dealing with it. And for the record, navel gazing weekends need to STOP.
