Waxy.org: Daily Log: Sex Baiting Prank on Craigslist Affects Hundreds

Waxy.org: Daily Log: Sex Baiting Prank on Craigslist Affects Hundreds: I’m very on the fence about this whole entire thing. On one hand, I appreciate this for what it is: exposing the fact that the ways of communication have had the differentiation between media deconstructed to such an extent that movement from private to public is a zero-effort game, and that at any point we represent ourselves digitally, we have to assume it’ll be made public. This changes communication in that prior, communication was locked to media, and flexibility between mediums was not seamless. This guy was doing something nefarious, but which equally is illuminating and scary. This coupled with the Face Book issue are interesting indeed. They warrant a long paper to be written, which I have no time to write.

You’re kidding, right? On the fence? If everything you do on the Internet has zero expectation of privacy, all anonymous and pseudonymous commentary on blogs will dry up; people will stop doing business on eBay (don’t want my buying habits exposed to everyone now) or with anyone but the biggest merchants; social networking sites will go away for all but the young and terminably stupid.

What this guy did was immoral, dishonest and the mark of a real asshole. Oh, and quite likely illegal. It’s not about whether the respondents to his ads are nice people, cheating husbands or using their work accounts. Two wrongs, quite simply, don’t make a right.

Perhaps one day the next wronged “Star Wars Kid” will pull a Columbine on the next “Jason Fortuny” and then we’ll see who’s sorry.

    on the other side…

Why is Jason the bad guy here? DID YOU READ THE POST? DID YOU READ THE REPLIES???? These are men who are looking to abuse and hurt people. You think this is OK?

Saying they are “consenting adults” is not good enough. The replies to the ad were from complete slimeballs and they SHOULD be outed. It is an honest reflection of the complete unhealth of the US sexual interactions that people would try and put the blame on Jason, not on the men who are looking to abuse and hurt women.
