I haven’t posted about Steve Irwin yet, but I think I need to, maybe. I’m a media junkie and so its interesting to see how some deaths are covered. Irwin’s death is having coverage I haven’t seen in a long time. This indicates that whatever you think about the man, he certainly made a cultural impact and put an indelible mark on television and environmentalism. I first started watching his documentaries in the mid-nineties. I’ve always been fascinated with nature, biology and especially the marine ecology, so his show appealed to me in this regard. From what I understand, the Irwin on TV was the Irwin in real life, and while certainly he was a bit over the top, I’d much rather have a personality promoting the conservation of our natural world than a personality famous for drugs, sex or violence. Its sad that the world lost a man who was so dedicated to the world around us, and keeping that world intact for generations to come. We can only hope a personality like him can further his work (Jeff Corwin?) and hope that the people he inspired will continue his legacy of knowledge and appreciation for the things around us.

As his death gets more and more coverage, I’m getting a better idea of how massive he was outside of Australia. Here at home, he only really came to prominence in the last five years, and even then, not to the same extent as the US.
For a good view of what he was like in real life, you might find his interview on Enough Rope (replayed here on TV last night) interesting.

I think the other thing is that we’d seen alot of the early animals, but as his appeal broadened so did the scope of his work.

I have friends from America emailing me with their sentiments, i didn’t know him, and to be frank I thought he was a bit of a dick, but I can certainly applaud him for being famous for some of the right reasons, and for not being a pretentious twat! He was a what you see is what you get kinda guy. I do think it is sad that he is gone and I hope his work (not the doco’s) but the zoo and the conservation etc continues in his name.

Had Germaine Greer not uttered a word the idiot would have died in peace -for us!
It seems the motto is: give them cakes, give them racism, sexism, fascism, sex (or rather porn) and they’ll lap it up like dogs just out of the Simpso Desert!
What the hell is it that he’s done? Shoved his head in front of a camera and spat out a script much like those give to President Bush and Primal Minuture Howard!
If you want to see contribution to the better undrestanding of science, there’s a great number of them, all of them quietly working at their research, all of them revealing their research, teaching students from the youngest to the oldest. One I am thinking of right now, is David Attenborough. Compare (if it’s at all possible) the two types of programs. In our Stevey’s program whose face more frequently appears in our sceans? His or those of the animals (I include here his audience) and so who is given to us to be seen as more important?
Now look at Attenborough’s. Clearly, the lesser frequency of the appearance of face in the program shows obviously that it is the animal that is the subject of the show, not the presenter -and whereas David is a presenter who knows his science, our own Stevey the wonder boy, is a presenter who knows showbiz. Or, rather, we’re told, he didin’t even know that. It was his wife and producer who did the show craft!

Why anyone would sound off in this fashion, makes no sence.
The man was all good. He did things that you may have considered “mean”, or “scary”. But the reality is, no animal was ever injured or destroyed. “Naughty” animals were moved or brought to the zoo to live a kings life, and we the people only gained from what he shared with us.
There is nothing bad about this family. Leave them alone and let them grieve in peace.
Go get caught up on your prozac……
