On the eve of the VMA’s

Let me remind you what they once were. In 1993, the VMA’s were broadcast when I was on vacation with my family in Hawaii. I will never forget watching them because of two things:

1) Pearl Jam debuted Animal and then did a surprise thing with Neil Young…

2) R.E.M. played Everybody Hurts and then transitioned into the “funk” version of Drive. Particularly great/sad/stirring as Michael’s grandfather had died the day before and he was wearing his hat. His eyebrows painted blue the only indicator of his grief on stage. Brilliant. I can’t find the Drive performance, but here is Everybody Hurts. Oh, also Mike Mills debuted the Nudie Suit.

So this year, while watching the chaos, the lack of talent (except of course…..) and the mediocrity that is sure to transpire, remember that in 1993, the VMA’s did indeed kick ass.
