The Single Most Important SNL Performance ever

Patti Smith, 1976

Post-script: I realized that March 23, 2006 marked the 10th anniversary of both the first time I met Michael Stipe and the first time I saw Patti Smith live. I was just about to turn 17.

This was 1976, when Patti Smith was still mostly circulating around the Bowery. To have her on SNL was exposing to the world at large something incredible. Many, many people saw this performance and it completely changed their lives. That includes a 16 year old Michael Stipe.

Wow, that performance could make anyone a fan. it’s too bad that today’s SNL performances are best-known for flubbed lip-synching. I actually just upgraded to a CD copy of Horses from a 10 year old cassette dub of the original vinyl, so I’m all about finding more Patti stuff now. Thanks!
