Apple to Offer iTunes Remote Control App for iPhone and iPod Touch – Mac Rumors

so this reminds me that Indigo Home Automation software + native iPhone App is going to absolutely MURDER as a home automation device. IndigoIndigo has an IP protocol and Zeroconf support. Our iPod Touch in our house is already doing this using a web based interface for us. Also consider the possibilities of using the iPod to control a wider array of devices, like your home stereo (using IRTransIRTrans), your air conditioner, etc. The iPod Touch suddenly kills the Phillips Prestigo, Logitech Harmony, etc. The Touch costs less than the Harmony, but IRTrans is not that cheap.

  1. I’m skeptical that Indigo + iPhone would really make a dent in the market. I suppose it’s really cool for us iPhone folks, but I don’t think people are going to rush out to get it. Plus, even as an iPhone and Harmony owner, I kind of prefer that separation. I enjoy that I have a kickass remote in my living room that doesn’t go anywhere. I don’t want to pull my phone out of my pocket to change the TV channel. It reminds me of a few years back when I had my Palm Pilot loaded with some software that used the IR to do the same thing. It was pretty unnecessary, inefficient, and I was certainly doing it more for the geek factor of having one device than anything else.

In other news, despite the fact that clearly this new feature requires your iPhone to maintain a connection with your computer over wifi, wireless syncing remains missing from the featureset. Here’s to a couple more years of USB2?
