Interesting thing about the non-DRM’ed Apple files….

They still are DRM’ed, just Digital Rights Metadata instead of Management…

This is super interesting, as its something I’ve been thinking for a long time. Personalize content, don’t restrict it.

  1. This is interesting, but at the same time, couldn’t you just convert them to MP3, which doesn’t contain that tag? Or couldn’t you edit/remove the user info data from the tags?

I would, of course, try all this myself, but I didn’t get around to installing the update until now, and as of right now, iTunes is erroring whenever I try to upgrade my EMI music. Oops.

  2. So is owning/tracking customer data the trade-off for giving up rights manageability?

  3. I just bought a few albums since the Upgrade option still isn’t working for me… it would indeed appear that you cannot modify these tags.

However, converting it to any other format does get rid of this data.
