2006 – the year the packets ruled all

2006 Web Technology Trends: Here is my opinion on 2006: I think 2006 is the year where the true potential of the Internet was realized. While that may seem hyperbolic, I believe that the ultimate postulate of the Internet, that of the flattening of the hierarchies of media, was realized in spades, and forced people to reevaluate the notion of what media, entertainment, culture, data and identity are and were.

Call it Web 2.0, the Read/Write Web, or whatever term you want to throw at it, but what it amounts to is that people finally realized that their collective packet-voice had as much perceived and actual authority as those who were used to broadcasting their joyful noise from radio towers and newspapers. With the packetizing of media, every mode of media is reduced to the same fundamental elements, and internally, no differentiation exists other than what is imposed by the spectator.
