Squeezing Money From the Music – New York Times

Squeezing Money From the Music – New York Times: The digg comments on this are hilariously simple-minded. This is an industry. As an industry, it depends on making more P than L in a P&L. The goal of a major record label is to use that MAJOR as a means of breaking people OUT of MINOR. We diversified the content we use to do such to the extent that it no longer is just a 5″ that we distribute, but up to 200+ SKU’s per release. I am lucky to work for a forward thinking label (and lucky to be in a position where the “thinking” is partly in my head). At any rate, music = cultural experience. Cultural experience != specific distribution systems. Innovation never comes cheaply, but can happen if people are creative enough.
